Locker Soccer Academy's Gear Guide: What Your Child Needs (and Doesn't Need) for Soccer Success in Columbus

Getting your child ready for soccer season? It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the endless options for gear and equipment, but fear not! Locker Soccer Academy in Powell, Ohio, is here to guide you through the essentials – and help you avoid unnecessary spending. We believe that the right gear can enhance your child’s experience on the field, but it’s their passion, skills, and enjoyment that truly lead to success.

The Must-Haves:

  1. Proper Footwear: Ditch the cleats! To protect our state-of-the-art turf fields and your child’s feet, we recommend turf shoes or sneakers. Look for comfortable, well-fitting shoes with good traction that allow for quick movements and changes in direction. Some popular brands include Nike, Adidas, and Puma.
  2. Comfortable Clothing: Your child will be running, jumping, and kicking, so choose clothing that allows for a full range of motion. Breathable fabrics like polyester or nylon are ideal for wicking away sweat and keeping your child cool.
  3. Water Bottle: Hydration is key for optimal performance and safety. Make sure your child has a reusable water bottle that’s easy to carry and refill.

Optional (But Recommended):

  • Shin Guards: While not mandatory for our youngest players, shin guards are a good idea for added protection as your child progresses in skill level. Look for shin guards that fit snugly and comfortably without restricting movement.
  • Soccer Socks: These long socks help keep shin guards in place and provide additional cushioning for your child’s feet.
  • Ball: While we provide balls for classes and practices, having a ball at home can encourage your child to practice independently and further develop their skills. Choose a size and weight appropriate for your child’s age and ability.

What You DON'T Need (Yet):

  • Expensive Cleats: As mentioned earlier, cleats are not allowed on our turf fields. Save the investment for when your child reaches a more competitive level of play where cleats are required.
  • High-Tech Training Equipment: Fancy gadgets and gizmos might seem appealing, but they won’t replace the value of good old-fashioned practice and play. Focus on building your child’s fundamental skills before investing in specialized equipment.
  • Designer Apparel: While looking sharp on the field is fun, prioritize comfort and functionality over brand names and fashion trends.
